Literature information of multiple sclerosis :

Pubmed ID 17961112
Year 2007
Title Comparative expression of human endogenous retrovirus-W genes in multiple sclerosis

Results of multiple sclerosis :

Expression up-regulation
Risk type Disease risk
Result ERVWE1 env-encoding DNA and RNA exhibited increased detection and expression in the brains of MS patients, while comparable changes in MSRV abundance were not observed.
Mechanism/Pathway A member of the HERV-W family for which a full length sequence encoding gag, pol, and env sequences is located on chromosome 7q (ERVWE1), and its env-encoded protein, syncytin-1, has been implicated in the neuroinflammatory cascade underlying MS pathogenesis, perhaps by affecting mitochondrial function in astrocytes.
