Mechanism/Pathway MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short single-stranded non-coding RNAs that modulate the expression of multiple target mRNAs by inducing either translational repression or mRNA degradation.MiRNAs have emerged as key post-transcriptional regulators of diverse biological processes, and mounting evidence point to miRNAs as critical players not only for the development of the immune system, but also for the correct function of both its innate and adaptive branches. Considering that miRNAs are stringently regulated in immune cells to maintain immune homoeostasis, it is conceivable that dysregulation of miRNA expression levels can determine an immune-tolerance breakdown and, therefore, the development of autoimmunity.
