| Title | Investigation of TGFB2 as a candidate gene in multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease |
| Risk Type | Disease risk |
| Main Result | We have demonstrated a trend towards association of the 5’ region of TGFB2, including the promoter region and exon 1, with PD. When coupled with the recent observation that TGFb2 appears to have a role in the maintainance of striatal dopamine levels in rodents, this finding provides some support for the hypothesis that variation in the TGFB2 gene influences susceptibility to idiopathic PD. We suggest that the relevance of marker rs6658835 should be explored in other PD cohorts |
| Result | Our failure to find an association between TGFB2 and MS is in keeping with the negative findings of two previous studies, although these were limited by their sample size and choice of only one microsatellite marker in the 5’ flanking region |
| Mechanism/Pathway | The transforming growth factor betas (TGFbs) control the growth, differentiation and function of a wide range of cells and have been implicated in many different disease processes |
